What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges, like implants and partial dentures, are used to replace missing teeth. There are several types of fixed dental bridges (cannot be removed), including conventional fixed, cantilever, and resin-bonded.

Dental bridges are comprised of a false tooth or teeth attached to crowns that will fix the teeth on either side of the gap. Bridges are a great way to replace missing teeth, often lasting up to 10 years or more. Unlike dentures, bridges are there to stay — they’re not taken out each day. There are a range of materials typically used for the fake tooth or teeth, including porcelain, gold, alloys, or other materials. The crowns connected to the fake tooth are then attached to the teeth on either side of the gap, serving as anchors for the bridge.

When Do You Need a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges are often used when a patient is missing one or more teeth, and the patient prefers a more permanent solution than a denture. In addition to restoring your smile, dental bridges also improve the functionality and health of your mouth. Having all of your teeth in place is key to maintaining your ability to speak and eat. Bridges also help hold other teeth in place and help retain your face shape.

Dental Bridge Procedure

The dental bridge process typically requires two visits to prepare your teeth, make the bridge, and install the bridge. At the first visit with Seattle Dental Associates, we will prepare the teeth on either side of the gap by reshaping them to make room for the crowns.

The reshaping process involves filing the sides and surface of the tooth down to have the crown fit properly. We will then take impressions of your teeth and send them to a dental laboratory to build the bridge and crowns. We’ll also fit your mouth with a temporary bridge to protect your teeth and gums between visits.

At the second visit, we will fit the bridge in your mouth and adjust it as necessary. If there are issues with the fit, we may require multiple visits and adjustments before cementing the bridge in place.
